As a student-athlete, Ursinus Hall-of-Famer Jess Lamina Gray ’08 was an All-American, All-Conference field hockey stalwart. Now, she’s excelling in a different field: farming.
The censorship of books in schools is again making waves across the country, but when you look at what gets challenged and what’s on these lists, you can see the trends and make some inferences as to what is really threatening for those who want to remove certain stories from libraries and schools.

Cynthia K. Ritter ’06 and Scott M. Lussier were married June 19, 2022. They welcomed a daughter, Isabelle Anne Lussier, on August 4, 2023.
Darrah Ellis ’16 earned an MFA in creative writing from Butler University in May 2023. Darrah reports that her husband, Melvin Ellis ’16, is enjoying his career in college nonprofit after seven years of teaching K-12.
An honors thesis written by David Drea ’19 titled, “Bringing Business Back to the Ballpark,” was cited in the book, Save Baseball: A Prescription for the Major Leagues by Larry Hausner.
Dawn M. Estelle ’92 and Jesse D. Searfoss ’93 were married October 1, 2023.
Mascots like Gritty, the Phillie Phanatic, and Swoop are ingrained in Philadelphia sports culture and are as recognizable as the teams and players. They are a symbol of fandom and team pride. But for the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles, that symbolism extends beyond a costumed caricature. Their two live Eagle mascots are a huge part of the gameday experience, and Ursinus alumna Elisa Tyler ’14 is partially responsible for their care and training.
Ursinus College is bringing Philanthropy Week and #Giving2UCday together into one fun and memorable celebration! Philanthropy Week, which raises awareness about the impact of private philanthropy, will be held from March 27 through 31. It will culminate with #Giving2UCday on Thursday, March 30, when Bears near and far will join together as One Ursinus to support the college’s current students!
