Early Alerts

The ISS oversees the early alert system, which allows faculty to notify our office and connect students with additional support services.

The early alert system is a way for professors to formally notify students of any issues of concern. Think of the early alert notification as an early warning: a chance to identify a problem and then correct course before your grade is pulled down beyond recovery.

Common examples of early alerts include a low exam score, frequently missing class, or late/missing assignments. By sending an early alert, your professor also notifies offices that can provide additional support, such as the Institute for Student Success, advisers, coaches, etc.

Your professor has noticed something they are concerned about and wants to bring in additional support from offices they believe can assist you.

Don’t panic! Remember, early alerts are not meant to be punitive.

Carefully read the message from your professor to identify their concerns and look over the recommended next steps.

Common examples of next steps to resolve an early alert include meeting with your professor, submitting late work, or connecting with a resource such as tutoring or writing fellow support.
