Ursinus College Singers Set for Inaugural Tour to New Orleans

The Ursinus College Singers are preparing for an unforgettable journey as they embark on their first-ever choir tour to New Orleans, a city rich in music, culture, and history. Under the direction of Professor Nicole Snodgrass, the ensemble will not only perform in historic venues but also immerse themselves in the vibrant traditions of the Crescent City.

A Vision for the First Year

The Ursinus College Singers debuted in the fall of 2024, and from the start, Professor Snodgrass envisioned something extraordinary for the ensemble’s inaugural year.

“I wanted our first year to be momentous, and traveling to New Orleans to share our music was the perfect event,” she said.

This tour will give students the opportunity to grow as musicians, explore a world-class musical city, and create lasting memories through performance and cultural experiences.

Immersed in Music and Culture

Beyond the thrill of performing, the students will have the chance to experience New Orleans’ legendary musical heritage firsthand.

“I am excited for my students to be immersed in the music and culture of New Orleans,” Snodgrass shared. “I can’t wait to take them to Café Du Monde for beignets and enjoy a live jazz brunch steamboat cruise while traveling down the Mississippi River.”

These experiences will allow students to engage with the city’s unique blend of influences, from jazz and gospel to Creole and French traditions.

Performing in Historic Venues

A highlight of the tour will be two major performances that showcase the Ursinus College Singers in prestigious settings.

“We will be performing at the historic St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter. It is the oldest continuously active Catholic Church in the United States, dating back to 1724,” Snodgrass explained.

Additionally, the ensemble will visit Loyola University of New Orleans for a special choral exchange with the Loyola University Chamber Singers. This collaboration will provide students with the opportunity to connect with fellow musicians and gain valuable artistic insight.

A Community of Support

Planning a choir tour of this scale comes with financial challenges, but Professor Snodgrass is deeply moved by the outpouring of support from friends, family, alumni, and community members.

“This is my thirtieth year as a choral director, and people from every stage of my life have generously donated to the Ursinus College Singers New Orleans Choir Tour. We even received a donation from my high school librarian!” she said.
