Arlene Andrews McLean Ph.D. ’62 Pledges $4 Million to Ursinus College to Support the Sciences
McLean’s transformative estate commitment will enhance the science programs through support for laboratory renovations, student and faculty research, innovative teaching, and more.
Ursinus College has announced a $4 million bequest commitment from Arlene Andrews McLean, Ph.D. ’62. Upon its realization, Dr. McLean’s gift will have a transformative impact on the academic community, fostering innovation, discovery, and opportunity. Such a contribution will directly support student research, improved laboratory facilities, and hands-on learning experiences for students, empowering them to tackle real-world challenges and develop solutions that benefit society. The investment will strengthen the college’s commitment to academic excellence and prepare the next generation of Ursinus graduates to make a lasting difference in a multitude of science fields.
“As a fellow scientist with a deep passion for its potential to change the world, I am truly grateful to Dr. McLean for her visionary philanthropy and unwavering support of our mission,” President Robyn Hannigan said. “Her commitment demonstrates a profound belief in the transformative power of education and scientific discovery. This remarkable bequest ensures that Ursinus will continue driving innovation and exploration in the sciences for generations to come.”
Dr. McLean is a long-time philanthropist, higher education advocate, and supporter of Ursinus. Arriving on campus as a first-generation college student at just 16, she trailblazed her way through Ursinus’ liberal arts curriculum, which paved the way for her advanced education and successful career in the sciences.
“On behalf of the faculty and students I am profoundly grateful for this generous support of the sciences at a pivotal moment of innovation,” said Gundolf Graml, provost and senior vice president for academic and campus life. “Dr. McLean’s commitment will significantly bolster our efforts to provide cutting-edge educational opportunities and foster a vibrant learning environment for our students.”
Previously, Dr. McLean established the Andrews Family Fellows program at Ursinus College to support cohorts of students pursuing graduate degrees in STEM fields. In October 2024, she made a gift of $1.2 million to the program. Dr. McLean’s career success and lifelong contributions earned her the Ursinus College Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
“I am proud to continue to support Ursinus and advance the science programs, knowing my gift will empower students to gain hands-on experience,” said Dr. McLean. “I believe students need to familiarize themselves with the most current analytical equipment to be competitive in the scientific fields. By making a gift to upgrade equipment and the sciences more broadly, students will be better prepared for their continued education and future careers.”
“Dr. McLean’s extraordinary generosity and commitment to supporting Ursinus students and faculty is appreciated and admired,” said Michelle Yurko, vice president for advancement and external relations. “We are profoundly grateful for her visionary leadership and dedication to our mission.”
In recognition of Dr. McLean’s extraordinary generosity, the chemistry floor in Pfahler Hall will be named the Arlene Andrews McLean, Ph.D. ’62 Chemistry Floor. The naming ceremony will take place during the annual Andrews Family Fellows Day on April 25, 2025.
