Ursinus College Introduces New Artificial Intelligence Minor

The new interdisciplinary minor in Artificial Intelligence (AI) will offer a comprehensive foundation in AI, blending practical tools, theoretical knowledge, and a critical understanding of the technology’s societal impact.

Ursinus College is launching an interdisciplinary minor in Artificial Intelligence (AI), set to debut in the Spring 2025 semester.

This innovative minor offers a comprehensive foundation in AI, blending practical tools, theoretical knowledge, and a critical understanding of the technology’s societal impact. The program aims to enhance students’ technical abilities while fostering a deeper awareness of AI-generated artifacts and their implications for modern society.

The AI minor requires 24 credits, with at least 17 credits coming from five core courses, including the newly introduced Foundations of Artificial Intelligence. The new coursework work will explore the ways we effectively interact with AI in our daily lives and through the digital media landscape. It will also explore the ethics of responsible AI while also providing experiential applications across a variety of domains.

Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science William Mongan will oversee the program.

“It is imperative that engaged citizens be equipped with a foundational understanding of how AI is trained, how it processes prompts and generates responses, how it’s used in various contexts, and how to identify and mitigate harmful outcomes,” Mongan said. “AI will influence daily operations in many industries and their consumers, making a foundation of AI tools, practices, and outcomes a core curriculum.”
