Introducing the Ursinus College Singers: A New Ensemble Takes the Stage

A new ensemble is debuting at Ursinus College with the addition of the Ursinus College Singers under the direction of Professor Nicole Snodgrass. This select ensemble will be performing both on and off campus and showcases a wide variety of music.

The Ursinus College Music Department is proud to introduce its newest vocal ensemble, the Ursinus College Singers, an auditioned choir of soprano and alto voices led by Prof. Nicole Snodgrass. Formed in response to the remarkable growth in student participation in choir, the Ursinus College Singers offer a unique opportunity for talented vocalists to showcase their abilities in a smaller, more intimate setting.

Since Prof. Snodgrass began teaching at Ursinus in the fall of 2022, the number of students in the college’s choir program has expanded nearly sixfold. “I wanted to provide additional performance opportunities for my incredible singers,” she explains. Unlike Voices of Ursinus, a large choir with a full range of vocal parts, the Ursinus College Singers focus on a more specialized group of voices, creating a dynamic and cohesive sound.

A Diverse and Exciting Repertoire

For their inaugural fall concert, the Ursinus College Singers are preparing a captivating program that spans a wide range of musical styles and time periods. Their repertoire includes contemporary works by female composers, a piece by Classic-Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn, beloved holiday classics, and a song made famous by Tony and Emmy Award-winning singer Kristin Chenoweth. In fact, the ensemble had the unique experience of seeing Chenoweth perform live with the Ocean City Pops Orchestra in September, offering them a source of inspiration for their upcoming performance.

Building Skills and Community

Beyond the music, Prof. Snodgrass hopes that students gain much more from their time with the Ursinus College Singers. “My hope is that my students will gain confidence and hone their skills while in this ensemble,” she says. The smaller size of the group allows for deeper musical connections and more personal interactions, fostering an environment of camaraderie and growth. The ensemble’s members have already bonded through shared experiences like traveling, attending concerts, and spending time together outside of rehearsals.

A Bright Future Ahead

Though the Ursinus College Singers were only formed in August, they’ve already made an impact. Their energy, focus, and passion are evident in every rehearsal and performance. The group is in high demand this holiday season, with performances scheduled at the Philadelphia Christmas Village in Love Park, Downtown Collingswood, and the Phoenixville Tree Lighting.

Looking to the future, Prof. Snodgrass sees the ensemble continuing to grow and thrive. “I see the Ursinus College Singers performing at more venues, collaborating with other musicians, and being magnificent ambassadors for Ursinus College,” she says.

Bringing Joy Through Music

As the Ursinus College Singers embark on their first full season, Prof. Snodgrass hopes they will have a lasting impact on the broader community. “I would like the Ursinus College Singers to be known throughout the community,” she says. “I want their music to bring joy, healing, and inspiration to all who hear them.”

With their talent, dedication, and growing list of performance opportunities, the Ursinus College Singers are set to become an integral part of the musical landscape both on and off campus.
