Hailed by critics as a film that captures the zeitgeist of the 1990s, Lone Star is a mystery/western about the murder of a sheriff in Texas, starring Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Peña, Kris Kristofferson, Ron Canada, and Matthew McConaughey. Find out what the film means to Professor Volkmer, who has long been appreciative of its small town western setting, treatment of racial strife, representation of forbidden love, and the writing and acting of its strong female lead. Chris Cooper’s wonderful anti-hero sheriff Sam Deeds bears a resemblance, he’d like to think, to one of the main characters in his novel. The film will be followed by a discussion with Professors Fleeger and Volkmer (and snacks).
