Research experiences are closer than imagined with the Ursinus’s Summer Fellows Program
Summer Fellows is an eight-week program that allows students to explore research. The entire school has the opportunity to participate, not just in the Biology Department. Under faculty mentorship, students learn valuable skills in the laboratory and get to explore what a career in research could look like. Within the program, students receive a stipend and on-campus housing. At the end of the experience, students get the chance to present their work through presentations.
From the summer of 2023, many students found their time in the program very helpful for their long-term goals. Biology Major, Nalia Seibert (Class of 2024) shared, “I was able to get experience doing more intense research in the lab which helped confirm that I would like to pursue a career in biological research.” While Biology Major, Ilyssa Marsh (Class of 2024) shared, “Summer Fellows gave me insight into what a career in the research profession would be like. Although I liked full-time research better than I anticipated, I do not see it being my final career goal. I am more confident in my decision to pursue a career in genetic counseling rather than a PhD. Learning what you don’t like has just as much value as learning what you do like!” No matter where you are in deciding your career path, Summer Fellows can be the stepping stone you need.
This experience is truly one of its kind, separating students from their busy class loads and letting them focus solely on their projects. Biology Major, Alexa Alessandrini (Class of 2024) shared, “…the Summer Fellows program is that it is a great opportunity to delve into projects or topics of interest for 8 weeks. You’re able to fully devote your time to a project of interest without the added stress of other classes, exams, and extracurricular activities. If you have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Fellows program, do it!”
