Chemistry Students Present at American Chemical Society National Meeting in San Diego

After completing multiple semesters of undergraduate research, Ursinus seniors Paige D’Elia (CHEM ’22), Alana Huynh (BCMB ’22), Alyssa St Jean (CHEM ’22), and Evan Yanagawa (CHEM ’22) presented their work with Chemistry professors Ryan Walvoord and Amanda Reig at the Spring 2022 American Chemical Society National Meeting held in San Diego, CA March 20-23.

Evan Yanagawa and Paige D’Elia jointly presented a poster on their work with Dr. Walvoord titled “Amination of hydroxyfluorophores using a Smiles rearrangement strategy” in the Organic Division poster session on Tuesday evening. Alyssa St Jean presented her work with Dr. Walvoord “Design of a fluorogenic probe for the detection of chlorite ion” as part of the Undergraduate Poster Session sponsored by the Chemical Education Division on Monday afternoon.

Alana Huynh co-presented a poster with Micaylah Bowers (BMB ’23), an undergraduate at Gettysburg College, as part of a research collaboration between the labs of Professor Reig and Professor Katherine Buettner in the Chemistry Department at Gettysburg. Their poster presentation, titled “Hydrolytic reactivity of de novo designed mini-metalloenzymes” was given as part of the Inorganic Division poster session on Sunday afternoon.

The conference, which had more than 10,000 attendees, offered a mix of in-person and virtual oral and poster presentations, along with social, educational, and career development events. In between the technical sessions, the Ursinus students and faculty enjoyed exploring the sights near the convention center in San Diego. Participation in the conference was made possible by grants from the Dreyfus Foundation for Yanagawa, Ursinus College for D’Elia, St Jean, Yanagawa, and Walvoord, and the NIH for Huynh and Reig.
