A Collegeville, Pa., native and proud Ursinus College alumna, Carol McMillin ’85 is the very definition of a “Bear for Life.” As director of environmental health and safety & risk management, she is one of the most visible—and always smiling—faces around campus, responsible for coordinating environmental and workplace compliance while ensuring the overall safety of faculty, staff, and students.

Born and bred right here in the borough, Carol still calls Collegeville home.

“I am encouraged by the work of the college in the last several years to improve relationships with the surrounding Collegeville community and become partners to make Collegeville an even better place to live, work, eat, and shop! I’ve witnessed the college’s growth—my first days back on campus occurred during the last phase of the Pfahler renovation—as well as adaptations to changing demographics, and enhancements to the curriculum.”

She has been integral to helping employees transition to remote work.

“The keys to maximizing your home office space are being comfortable and maintaining neutral posture to prevent future musculoskeletal disorders. Using a work surface that is 28 to 30 inches high, a chair that supports your lower back, an external keyboard and mouse with your laptop, and positioning your screen or monitor so that it’s viewed at or near the top—along with frequent stretching and micro-breaks every hour—will help prevent discomfort and support neutral posture.”

Carol and her husband, Brian ’78, enjoy the great outdoors!

“[We] enjoy hiking in the Delaware Water Gap. The trails are plentiful, views are magnificent, and the waterfalls are beautiful. Kayaking and boating occur on Lake Wallenpaupack. My family has spent many summer vacations there, and we are fortunate enough to own a home in a community by the lake.

She considers herself a Bear for Life.

“Ursinus has afforded me so many opportunities from the time I was a student and then throughout my career. In turn, it’s important to remember to give back to the college and those relationships over time, and to tell others about all the good work occurring at the college.”
