Victoria Szabo Visits Ursinus

Victoria Szabo, Duke University’s Associate Research Professor of Visual and Media Studies, came to Ursinus on October 29th and 30th to present projects she and her students completed and are still working on. She discussed how people can utilize digital archives and digital media to find out more information on history, culture, and family heritage.

On Monday, October 29th, Szabo talked about her work on the Wired! Lab for Digital Art History & Visual Culture and how it uses technology to engage in the past and uncover information to foster more cultural gains. One example she provided was Ghett/App, an app which analyzes and explores different audio clips, photos, texts, and videos from fourteen designated locations the group was interested in. 3D models help viewers learn more about the places but also interact with hands-on files and digital media.

On Tuesday, October 30th, Szabo taught Ursinus faculty and students how to use Neatline on the site Omeka. She took inspiration and drew examples from her work on Visualizing Venice, a project that discusses the changes within the city of Venice, Italy. She showed those present how to import data onto Neatline and organize it to its fullest capacity.
