Ursinus String Ensemble, led by Maestro Melinda Rice, is a musical home for string players at the college, exploring repertoire that engages with the world around us, from classical gems to settings of film music and folk songs to new works commissioned specifically for the ensemble. Students in the string ensemble have the opportunity to work with visiting artists throughout the year, including, in the past, the Daedalus String Quartet, cellist Melissa Brun, violinist Carlos Santiago, and composer and jazz pianist Amy K. Bormet. String players have shared their talents at Ursinus’s own Berman Art Museum and the Wharton Esherick Museum, as well as at the campus’ Bomberger Auditorium. This year visiting musicians from Not So Silent Cinema work with the ensemble as student musicians prepare to play alongside them in an on-campus live score to the silent film, Vampyr. Join Ursinus String Ensemble and join a group of string players expanding their knowledge and love of string music, from exploring musical vocabulary alongside a film to digging deep into composers like Mendelssohn and Holst.
