Common Questions

These are the most frequently asked questions we receive from new and prospective students:

Two semesters of the same foreign language is one of the graduation requirements at Ursinus College.

In order for the Modern Language Department to adequately place you, you need to complete the Foreign Language Questionnaire and the Language Placement Test. Based on your foreign language background and the exam score, our department recommends a class and forwards that information to your advisor.

You will get credit in the language after you sent your AP exam grades to the Registrar Office. Depending on the language and the official score, you may obtain 8 credits in a foreign language.

If you process the official score of your AP score and receive credits for it, you will not need to take extra courses in a foreign language. We encorage you, however, to continue withe the study of langauge.

We do need your Foreign Language Questionnaire. If you do not have any experience with the new language, then you may register in the novice class of your new choice.

Like any other department, we can only offer a limited number of languages and programs. In the past, we have been able to offer additional languages under the ML- prefix. For more information, consult the Catalog or the Modern Language Department.

We offer majors and minors in French, German, and Spanish. Japanese is only offered as a minor. There are no minor or major programs for Chinese and Arabic.

Between 76% and 80% of our majors graduate with a second major*. It is indeed very common that our majors are double majors.

Biology is the most common double major for majors in French, German, and Spanish. International Relations, Business and Economics, and Psychology are also very common second majors among our graduates.*

The Modern Language Department does not have its own study-abroad programs. Instead, we work with the Center for International Programs to find the best fit for each of our majors. Ursinus students have a great variety of academic and personal interests, and by offering thousands of possible study abroad experiences the Center for International Programs is an ideal resource for them.
