Learning Goals

  • Students will be able to explore the physical and psychosocial aspects that influence both non-communicable and communicable disease as individual constructs and correlated events.
  • Students will be able to integrate physiologic, biopsychosocial, lifestyle factors, and movement analysis to develop programs that address the needs of the individual across the lifespan and design programs to improve human performance.
  • Using the social determinants approach students learn how health disparities mirror wider social inequalities in society.Understand the social, historical, political, and economic factors that influence health policy and organization of health in the United States and across the globe.
  • Students gain exposure to components of community health programming: Assessment, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation.

  • Compare the distinct roles of organ/organ system structure and function with the major regulatory mechanisms required for life and homeostatic maintenance.
  • Determine how exercise changes body structure, composition and physiological responses.
  • Analyze anatomical, physiological, and psychological adaptations associated with behavioral modification.
  • · Integrate the contributions of general pathology including cellular, molecular and tissue responses with systemic pathology.

  • Determine energy costs of physical activity and exercise. (VO2, METs)
  • Understand the influence of injury and disease on metabolic parameters of exercise.
  • Evaluate macronutrient and micronutrient needs in healthy, active, and diseased populations.
  • Identify barriers of nutrition due to environmental, cultural, economic, and individual factors.

  • Students will be able to identify, evaluate and execute appropriate testing protocols for initial program development and follow up assessment.
  • Students will be able to recognize biomechanical, physiologic, and psychologic risk factors for injury.
  • Students will be able to understand and integrate biopsychosocial, physiologic, and biomechanical analysis into program design, implementation, and modification.

  • Students will be able to demonstrate ethical awareness and a commitment to cultural competence and cultural humility.
  • Students will be able to identify constructs of ethical principles in order to assess multifactorial issues within their profession.
  • Students will be able to conduct ethical reflection and communicate the implications of ethical choices to determine an ethical solution.
  • Students will be able to develop an integrated character of ethical leadership within their profession.

  • Students will be able to present materials while maintaining good posture, using positive gestures and eye contact along with vocal expressiveness that make the presentation compelling, engaging, easy to understand and clear.
  • Presentations [oral and written] will include a variety of supporting materials, such as, explanations, examples, illustrations, statistics, analogies, quotations from relevant authorities that actively engage the audience and significantly support the presentation through traditional and digital methods and platforms which establish the presenter’s credibility on the topic.
  • Presentations [oral and written] should be precisely stated, maintain a relevant focused central theme, be appropriately cited and follow organizational patterns, which are clearly and consistently observable and makes the content of the presentation cohesive.
