What led to your decision to transfer?
I chose Ursinus because of its reputation for excellence, its location strikes a happy medium in proximity to a major city while enjoying suburban setting, and its size allows for smaller classes with more opportunities to form meaningful relationships with students and professors.
Ursinus has provided me with opportunities to join in research projects with my professors and peers. Additionally, the various academic and artistic events e.g., lectures and concerts, etc… that connect the school and the community create an inclusive and love-of-learning environment.
How do you find that Ursinus College supports students of high academic achievement?
Ursinus supports students of high academic achievement by creating challenging curriculums, giving students opportunities to participate in fellowships, and offering scholarships.
Outside of the classroom, what are some activities or opportunities that you pursued at Ursinus?
I have attended field hockey, women’s soccer, and softball games. However, I am planning to attend gymnastics events, swimming competitions, and theatrical performances too. I also attended a therapy cow petting event and a Halloween musical performance at the Berman Museum.
Please share about any opportunities for hands-on experiences or internships. What did you do and what did you learn?
I joined a marine mammalogy research group that is supervised by a professor. Also, because of Ursinus’ reputation, I have been offered a summer internship at Merck.
What were the challenges of adapting to a new college environment, and how have you met them?
Adapting to a new setting is always a little nerve wracking, but the culture at Ursinus is so inviting that I quickly overcame the anxiety. However, there are other opportunities that eased the transition. The transfer student orientation was super helpful, too. We became more familiar with the campus and were given a ton of great information. We were even assigned to students who previously transferred and could offer us advice based on their experiences. I had a wonderful transfer advisor as well, Dr. McCarthy. She was always available and extremely helpful. She even taught my CIE class. Speaking of the CIE class, it created a sense of comradery among the transfer students and helped us better understand the culture of Ursinus and its four questions. The curriculum’s design encouraged us to attend campus events and reflect on our experiences.
What has surprised you most about your experience as a student at Ursinus?
The array of student clubs is so broad; there’s something for everyone. I have also been surprised by the school’s commitment to participating in the community. Perhaps the most surprising thing I discovered was the Welcome Home Project/Partnership with the Lenape Tribe and the Perkiomen Valley School District.
Why would you encourage another student to transfer to Ursinus?
Ursinus is a great choice for students who want to experience a beautiful campus, challenging courses along with abundant resources to help them succeed, a well-respected curriculum, opportunities to participate in research or projects with faculty, engage with the local community, and approach their studies from a well-rounded liberal arts perspective.
